CDPHE Skunk Rabies Brochure

posted in CVMA eNews Digest March 25, 2011

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has created a brochure on skunks and rabies that can be downloaded and printed to be share with your clients.

The brochure answers the following questions and provides a list of ways to protect against rabies:

  • What animals are most likely to have rabies?
  • What should I do if I am exposed to rabies?
  • How do I know if an animal has rabies?
  • Why is skunk rabies such a concern? Hasn't rabies been around in bats for hundreds of years?
  • How will I know if a skunk or bat has bitten one of my animals?
  • What is the best way to avoid rabies?
  • Which animals should I vaccinate against rabies?
  • What will happen if my pet or livestock animal is bitten by a rabid skunk?

Click here for the PDF version of the brochure, or visit the CDPHE website at http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/dc/zoonosis/rabies/

RE:       Rabies vaccination certificates

The Denver Area Veterinary Medical Society wishes to share with its partners in animal care and control some important information about thorough completion of rabies vaccination certificates.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians (NASPHV) both provide the following statement on their Web sites:

RABIES CERTIFICATE: All agencies and veterinarians should use NASPHV Form 51 (revised 2007), Rabies Vaccination Certificate, or an equivalent. This form can be obtained from vaccine manufacturers, NASPHV

http://www.nasphv.org/Documents/RabiesVacCert.pdf, or CDC http://www.cdc.gov/rabies. The form must be completed in full and signed by the administering or supervising veterinarian. Computer-generated forms containing the same information are also acceptable.

The NASPHV form is attached and is set up so that you can fill in the information and send it to your printer.  Whether you use this form or a computer-generated form from your system, DAVMS urges you to provide all the data points identified in the NASPHV form so that subsequent evaluation and decisions by veterinarians or animal care and control professionals can be based on complete and reliable data.
